Whether in front of a mirror or role-playing with a colleague, practising a scenario that usually makes you feel unconfident is another great way to help you see how easily you can change your mindset. Often, the fear of a person or situation can make us act in a certain way — so by facing it and practising it, you are actively facing that worry and breaking down the barriers.
If you prefer emailing, then start calling people instead. If talking to a prospect over the phone is easier, then push yourself to do a face-to-face meeting.
By confronting your demons, the fear will subside. Part of being confident is being believable, authoritative and communicating well. It can be achieved through assertiveness techniques — moving from a passive position to contributing to a conversation and clearly articulating your viewpoint. When we feel unconfident we ignore social cues to contribute; embrace these moments to add to the conversation and believe that your input is valid — the more you do it the easier it will become.
Watch and emulate speakers that exude confidence — learn from the tone of their voice, the pace of the presentation and how they gesticulate. You could join a public speaking group, hire a mentor, or actively attend and watch presentations. There is a lot of content online — TED Talks especially attract great, confident speakers.
And as an added incentive, it comes with personal benefits to boot — namely enjoying work and the relationships more. You may end up feeling like a fake, having been hired under false pretences. And the stress that results from the fear of being "found out" can be extreme. Conversely, it is possible to be too self-confident. A person who is overconfident can end up being non-productive -- that is, persisting when they really should be giving up.
Audrey Brodt is a psychologist in Denver. She does some consulting in the business world in addition to her clinical work. She agrees with Leary that it is possible to fake it, if you are calm, cordial and a good listener. Her best advice is to set realistic expectations for yourself, and to accept that you have a lot to learn. Instead of trying to get people to like you, help them to feel comfortable with you. Forgive yourself for making mistakes and find out what you can learn from them. They work better in a team. Brodt says she has worked in some situations in the business world where a leader lacked confidence, and it created problems.
One of the things we do to discourage ourselves is to compare ourselves to other people, says Brodt.
