Human extinction - Wikipedia
That includes 1, mammal species, 1, bird species and 2, fish species. Nearly half the threatened species are plants. Scientists have only examined a small fraction of the estimated 8 million species on Earth. Five times in the past, Earth has undergone mass extinctions where much of life on Earth blinked out, like the one that killed the dinosaurs.
The report goes beyond species. Of the 18 measured ways nature helps humans, the report said 14 are declining, with food and energy production noticeable exceptions. The report projects Many of the worst effects can be prevented by changing the way we grow food, produce energy, deal with climate change and dispose of waste, the report said.
That involves concerted action by governments, companies and people. Individuals can help with simple changes to the way they eat and use energy, said the co-chairman of the report, ecological scientist Josef Settele of the Helmholtz Center for Environmental Research in Germany.
Much of that can be done by eliminating food waste and being more efficient, he said. Follow Seth Borenstein on Twitter: borenbears.

Connect with the definitive source for global and local news. The Associated Press. In the Great Dying, global temperatures rose by more than 10 degrees Celsius 18 degrees F over the span of a few thousand years — a blink of an eye in geologic terms. Penn and his University of Washington colleagues found that, should we continue unabated fossil fuel use, we could unavoidably kick off another crisis like the Great Dying by about Fast forward another thousand years, and we could be looking at all of the extinction, just much, much faster.

When water warms, its capacity to retain oxygen is reduced. Think of the air bubbles that form on the bottom of a pot being heated on the stove and then escape. The same thing, hypoxia, happened to the oceans million years ago on a massive scale.

The researchers found that during the Great Dying, the oceans lost about 76 percent of their oxygen. Earlier this year, a different study projected how blowing past Paris Agreement goals would change our oceans. The researchers had to extend their modeling effort far beyond — the furthest out most climate models go — because they found that the impact was still getting worse. That study found that ocean oxygen will keep declining until about the year , even if fossil fuel emissions cease in the next few decades, because our current rapid phase of warming is causing ocean circulation to slow down.
Beyond that, it could take about 6, years for ocean oxygen to recover to a new equilibrium state. There is a way out.
